Be aware: West Nile Virus found in mosquitoes throughout Lorain County
West Nile Virus (WNV) has been found in mosquitoes throughout Lorain County. While it’s common to have WNV-positive mosquitoes this time of year, we’re seeing higher numbers than usual.
Be aware and take precautions to reduce your risk.
Wear mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially in the evening. Help stop mosquitoes from breeding around your home – empty or throw away standing water (i.e., buckets, pots, trash, bird baths, toys, tires).
What we’re doing to protect the public from WNV.
Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) has begun evening mosquito spraying to reduce your risk from these WNV mosquitoes.
- Sprayings will be done throughout Lorain County; usually between 8 p.m. - 12 a.m.
- Prioritizing areas with positive mosquito pools and where mass gatherings are scheduled (fairs, festivals, etc.).
- We are keeping local leaders informed as to when their community is scheduled for spraying to help spread the word.
No cases of WNV in humans have been reported in Lorain County as of 8/10/2025.
Signs and symptoms
While most people (about 80%) infected with WNV will not develop any symptoms, some people will develop a fever with other symptoms like headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. A few people (about 1 in 150 people) may get seriously ill and develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). If you think you or a family member may have WNV, talk with your health care provider.
