How to get a COVID-19 test
Lorain County Public Health maintains a list of local COVID-19 testing locations. Check eligibility requirements before you go, since some locations require doctor’s orders or symptoms.
If you get a COVID-19 test, request a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test because they are more accurate than antigen tests (rapid or screening tests). If you get a positive antigen test result, request a PCR test in order to get a COVID-19 diagnosis. Antigen tests are currently being used by the Walk-In Urgent Care clinics in Lorain, Elyria, and Avon.
What to do after you got tested:
A negative COVID-19 test does NOT release you from quarantine. Anyone who has had close contact with a person who has COVID-19 is required to quarantine for a full 14 days. COVID-19 symptoms could develop any time within those 14 days.
What to do if quarantined:
If you have COVID-19 symptoms, self-isolate at home. If any members of your household or close contacts begin showing symptoms, they should also self-isolate and think about getting a PCR test. Return to regular activities when:
- At least 10 days have passed since your symptoms first started, AND
- You have not had a fever (without the use of fever reducing medications) for at least 24 hours, AND
- You’ve had improvement in symptoms for 3 days (72 hours)
