3 ways to keep your buzz off the road

Posted on: June 26, 2018

The Lorain County Safe Community Coalition is using unexpected strategies to remind everyone that summer celebrations must include sober driving plans. During the Lorain International Festival last weekend, Coalition members posted fliers on the doors of portable toilets – the fliers offered tips on how to find a sober ride home. Next, in preparation for Independence Day, the Coalition will team up with 10 Discount Drug Mart locations to display ways to get a sober ride on water bottles.

“Creating safer roads starts with how we talk with friends and make plans. Just as we make plans for cookout menus, vacations, and parties, make a plan for a sober ride too,” said David Covell, MPH, RS, health commissioner at Lorain County Public Health (LCPH). The Coalition offers three simple ways to keep your buzz off the road and stay safe this summer:

  1. Ask a friend or family member to be your designated driver
  2. Order an Uber or Lyft
  3. Call a taxi

Sober driving makes a difference for everyone who calls Lorain County home - it reduces injury, crashes, and costs. Between 2014 and 2016, 476 Lorain County road crashes involved alcohol. Some of those crashes resulted in hefty fines, legal fees, missed work, death and grief for loved ones, car insurance rate increases, vehicle repair costs, and medical bills. In 2017, 34 people were killed in Lorain County traffic crashes; 12 of those deaths were in alcohol-related crashes.
