18th Annual Zero Proof Mix Off

Posted on:

On Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, taste test festive holiday beverages from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Conference Center, 1005 N Abbe Road in Elyria during the Zero Proof Mix Off. Lorain County’s largest holiday party with a purpose – also a non-alcoholic drink competition – annually draws hundreds of local residents for tasty drinks, live music, prizes and more. Come to taste delicious non-alcoholic drinks mixed by local organizations, vote for your favorite, then take a recipe book home to mix your favorite zero-proof recipes – just in time for holiday parties. No cost to attend.

"This event provides a chance for each of us to join the conversation to increase awareness of sober driving," said David Covell, MPH, RS, health commissioner at Lorain County Public Health. "Behaviors and culture must shift in order to create safer roadways in Lorain County, and holiday parties are a great place to start."

In 2018, 372 crashes occurred when someone drove while under the influence. Nine people died because of those crashes.  The Zero Proof Mix Off reminds holiday hosts to serve zero-proof options at parties and events. It also reminds everyone to always make plans for a sober ride home. The Safe Communities Coalition puts on the Zero Proof Mix Off as part of its mission to prevent and reduce injuries and deaths on Lorain County roads. The Coalition has worked towards this goal for over 25 years, and includes members from businesses, law enforcement, the OVI Taskforce, healthcare professionals and residents.
