Certified Pool Operator training course

Lorain County Public Health (LCPH) will host a certified training course for public pool and spa operators. At the training, learn the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills to manage pool and spa operations. This training has helped protect millions of swimmers throughout the world. This type of training through the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF®) Certified Pool/Spa Operator® (CPO®) Certification program is the world's leading pool and spa training credential.

  • $300 for early registration before May 6, 2019

Participants receive a course packet (including a book and supplemental materials) via mail once forms get processed.
Participants who register after May 6 will need to pick up the course packet at LCPH, 9880 S. Murray Ridge Rd., Elyria, OH.

The CPO® Certification program is a two-day, in-person class (14-16 hours total) that covers information from the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook and local codes. A certified NSPF® instructor teaches the class. This setting offers direct interaction with an instructor and fellow students. Earn a CPO® certification (valid for 5 years) after passing an open book exam at the end of the course.

During the course, learn how to:

  • Reduce risks in and around the water
  • Prevent drowning, recreational water illness, suction entrapment, diving accidents, electrocutions, chemical hazards, and slips and falls
  •  Address regulatory guidelines
  • Maintain disinfection and water balance
  • Manage water problems
  • Perform troubleshooting, chemical testing, and record keeping
  • Manage chemical feed
  • Utilize automation and technology

The NSPF® Pool and Spa OperatorTM Handbook and the Certified Pool/Spa Operator® (CPO®) certification program are the most current, comprehensive, and widely accepted resources in the field. This course has established a baseline of care in the public pool and spa field. These resources are updated annually with references to new technologies and regulations.
