Lorain County Medical Reserve Corps

6/23 -- Volunteer opportunities have increased in Lorain County, and the Lorain County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is here to coordinate these efforts. The Lorain County MRC was created in March 2008 to enhance response efforts during times of emergency and non-emergency. The Lorain County MRC is state and nationally recognized, which allows for enhanced training opportunities and liability coverage for registered volunteers. The Lorain County MRC is currently enrolling volunteers in the program. Medical professionals, as well as non-medical volunteers, are encouraged to join. Spring and Summer Severe Weather Safety Awareness

3/18 -- With the passing of winter, Ohioans looks forward to spring and summer, but those seasons unfortunately brings a different set of severe weather. Extreme heat, floods, thunderstorms, severe lightening, and tornadoes are common events. To assist in public awareness and aid in the reduction of the impact of severe weather, the Ohio Committee on Severe Weather Awareness conducts "Safety Awareness Weeks".

Winter Storms and Extreme Cold

Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can immobilize an entire region, and we in northeast Ohio are prone to severe winter weather. Winter storms can result in flooding, storm surge, closed highways, blocked roads, downed power lines, and hypothermia.

Ready America Instructional Videos

9/26 -- Ready.gov, a website created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, offers short, instructional videos on how to prepare for disasters. Four videos, ranging in length from three to five minutes, are available on the website. The topics include older Americans, people with disabilities, pets, and general family preparedness. Pack an Emergency Supplies Kit

9/20 --

One important step families can take to prepare in the event on an emergency is packing an emergency supplies kit. Emergency supplies kits, also referred to as go-kits, can be made using a large plastic bin or similar item. Supplies, such as non-perishable foods, medications, and blankets, are added to the kit, along with emergency contact information and the family emergency plan. The supplies need to be reviewed at least once a year or when the family's needs change, and the kit needs to be kept in a place that is easily accessible should the family need to evacuate quickly. There should be enough items for every family member in the household.
