full story Spring and Summer Severe Weather Safety Awareness
Winter Storms and Extreme Cold
Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can immobilize an entire region, and we in northeast Ohio are prone to severe winter weather. Winter storms can result in flooding, storm surge, closed highways, blocked roads, downed power lines, and hypothermia.
Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems.
One important step families can take to prepare in the event on an emergency is packing an emergency supplies kit. Emergency supplies kits, also referred to as go-kits, can be made using a large plastic bin or similar item. Supplies, such as non-perishable foods, medications, and blankets, are added to the kit, along with emergency contact information and the family emergency plan. The supplies need to be reviewed at least once a year or when the family's needs change, and the kit needs to be kept in a place that is easily accessible should the family need to evacuate quickly. There should be enough items for every family member in the household.
